Discover the fascinating life of honeybees at Herd and Hive’s picturesque apiary, located at the Canalside Cafe in Kildwick, West Yorkshire. Surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales, this immersive experience offers a rare chance to get up close to working hives in a relaxed, rural setting.
After a full safety briefing, participants are provided with protective suits before heading to the hives. You will explore colonies of different sizes, including hives that can house over 50,000 bees, while learning how the colony functions and how honey is produced. Along the way, there is the opportunity to spot the queen bee and understand how she supports the hive’s structure.
Guided by an experienced beekeeper, you will also be introduced to the smoker and learn how it is used to safely manage the bees during hive inspections. The experience is designed to be both educational and engaging, offering plenty of opportunity to ask questions, observe closely, and take photographs.
At the end of the session, participants leave with a jar of pure Yorkshire Herd & Hive honey as a sweet reminder of the day.
