Our Matcha Guide
So what is matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder of green tea that’s extremely popular in Japan and known for its vivid green colour. Many people find it a great alternative to coffee as it offers a slow release of caffeine rather than the crash and jitters that some people might experience with coffee.
Why is matcha so expensive?
Matcha may seem expensive for what it is but it’s for a very good reason. The way matcha is made is incredibly labour intensive. First the tea leaves are deprived of sunlight so they produce excess chlorophyll (that’s what gives matcha its intense colour!). Then the leaves are picked, gently steamed and dried and ground into a fine powder.
How long will it last before it expires?
This will depend on what matcha you buy but typically it will last for 1-2 years if sealed and stored properly. However it’s recommended to consume your matcha within the first 2-3 months to enjoy the very best flavour.

Is matcha healthy?
Yes, matcha is considered healthy because it contains a high concentration of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. However, like coffee, it’s recommended to consume matcha in moderation due to its high caffeine content (otherwise you might start bouncing off the walls).
How to prepare matcha
First whisk your matcha with a little water in a small bowl or chawan (tea bowl) using a traditional bamboo whisk or electric whisk until it blends together. This is a crucial step as no one wants lumps in their matcha!
Then you can either mix it into frothed hot or cold milk for a latte or enjoy it the traditional way with hot or cold water.
What can I add to matcha?
So many different flavours! You can keep it simple and sweeten it by adding honey or sugar.
Or, you can try adding a syrup. Blueberry and vanilla are some of the most popular flavours for good reason (they are delish!). You can even add it into food, whether it’s brownies, ice cream or even smoothies. Yum.
