Natural, undyed open weave storage baskets for your home. Woven by a skilled member of a thriving fairtrade cooperative in Tanzania.
The exquisite open weave basket was produced by a skilled craftwoman working within a network of village cooperatives in Tanzania. As is the case with most basket weavers in Africa, the art of weaving passed down the family line from grandmother to mother to daughter.
In Tanzania these ethical baskets are used for keeping food staples like maize, potatoes and onions clean and dry. They also make beautiful woven planters and bring a splash of African style to the home when used to store magazines and toiletries, loo rolls, toys and even baby supplies.
Basket weaving is an empowering craft. The cooperative’s business model offers flexible and fairly paid work - the opportunity to earn a vital, additional income during the dry seasons. Primarily farmers, these craftswomen pay their children’s school fees and family medical bills with their earnings from basket sales, as well as purchasing school uniform and making essential home improvements. Many weavers use their basket earnings to invest in their livestock businesses as well.
The cooperative uses profits to develop future business for the weavers, purchasing solar lighting and kerosene lamps so that vital weaving work can continue after dark, for example. Cooperative leaders also arrange product development training for weavers, as well as investing in healthcare education for all.
