Perfect for tidying away all manner of bits and bobs. Hand-woven in Kenya and hand-embroidered in Rwanda by thriving women's fairtrade cooperatives.
Pop one of these on the stairs for clutter to go up, and another on the landing for stuff to come down – or give one to each of your children and send them off to tidy their rooms! These woven and embroidered baskets are brilliant for tidying away all those bits and bobs that don’t seem to know where else to go: remote controls, make up, receipts, colouring pencils and crayons – you name it!
We pride ourselves on collaborating with the most talented craftswomen in Africa, so these sisal baskets bring together the skills of Kenyan weavers and Rwandan embroiderers in an all-female crusade for empowerment.
The Kenyan weavers normally learn the craft from their mothers and grandmothers, working together as part of a cooperative that produce several of our collections. There was a time when these women would have to make the long trek to Nairobi to sell their wares, but today we bring the basket orders to them.
Talented Rwandan embroiderers add the finishing details to these handy woven baskets, crafting in a small cooperative whose aims are to empower women and bring greater economic development to their village. Belgian nuns living in Rwanda in the seventies trained many of these embroiderers in this fine skill, and today their work is as beautiful as it was when their workshop was first established.
Materials: Sisal and Wool
