Each seed ball contains around 30 seeds per ball from a mix of Common Poppy, Oxeye Daisy, Musk Mallow, Corn Marigold, Purple Field Scabious, Red Campion and White Cow Parsley. Our tins have 20 seed balls, enough to cover 1 square metre in a garden bed or 3-5 medium sized pots (leave at least 10cm between each ball).
We make the balls at our Seedball workshop in London, from a mixture of UK wildflower seeds, clay, peat-free compost and chilli powder.
The outer clay protects the seeds from ants, birds and mice, and once sufficient water has permeated the clay, the seeds inside begin to germinate - helped along by the nutrients and minerals contained within the ball. The chilli powder continues to deter slugs and snails while the seed ball slowly breaks down and the seeds sprout.
Wildflowers are naturally slow to grow, and the balls can take 2-4 weeks to begin to sprout. Some will flower in the first year while the perennial species may not flower until the second year, but the display should keep getting better each year! The more they are initially watered, the quicker they will be to start to grow, although they will be ok to leave them to the rain to water them as well :)
Wildflower seed balls (or seed bombs as some people call them) are ideal for gifting, as the person you're giving them to doesn't need to have much outdoor space or gardening knowledge to use them. Scatter anytime from early Autumn through to the end of Spring, wildflower seeds love a chilly spell!
