Football Women's Euro 2025 Final, Jakob Park, Basel, Switzerland. 27 July, 2025. Vicki Sparks

England retained their European crown in dramatic fashion in 2025, defeating world champions Spain on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Basel. Alessia Russo’s second-half header cancelled out Spain’s opener before Hannah Hampton saved two penalties and Chloe Kelly struck the winning spot-kick to spark the celebrations. England became the first senior English team to win a major tournament on foreign soil.

Vicki Sparks’ original pre-match commentary notes offer a unique insight into the preparation behind the BBC’s coverage of a final that would become another historic night for the Lionesses.
