A beautiful belt hand made in Devon from Italian leather with a unique patination and a solid harness buckle in solid brass or stainless steel
The Dartington Belt is hand made using single layer 3.5mm thick Full Grain Italian leather. We choose these hides for the Dartington belt partly because of the interesting colour choices and partly because the leather while being fairly thick and durable is also supple. Most naturally tanned leather of this thickness starts off quite stiff and has to be broken in. Not so with our Dartington belt – it's supple from the start.

Available in Cocoa and Black. The buckles are traditional harness buckles, solid and extremely hardwearing you can choose stainless steel or solid brass.

Personalisation of up to 12 characters is available. We use traditional bookbinders brass type (24pt Gill Sans) embossed on the reverse of the belt (hidden on the inside). During the hot stamping process we use foil to emboss the letters. The personalisation will follow the same orientation as our maker's marque.

The leather has a full grain finish which means that every blemish or scar on the cows skin will be present on the finished hide and apparent on the finished product. The hides are dyed by hand at the tannery with an aniline dye. This process allows the grain and all the individual markings on the cows skin to show through. The dye is absorbed into the hide in an irregular way so giving a unique appearance to every belt. No two are exactly the same.

The Dartington Belt is handmade in Dartington South Devon by traditional leather craftspeople using either Italian cowhide. The hides are aniline dyed which, like stain on wood, lets the grain and all its natural imperfections show through. No two are exactly the same.
Tanner Bates products are different. We are hand makers, leather specialists, a small business of 3 makers - all apprentice trained in our Devon workshop. Our roots are in traditional equestrian leatherwork and our techniques and hand tools are the same as those used by saddlers and bridlemakers for generations.
We pay attention to details especially our edges which are sanded, sealed and burnished. This edging detail, which can only be achieved by hand with time and concentration, is only found on traditional hand made leatherwork. This technique and the quality of our leather is what makes Tanner Bates products different from other mass produced and factory made items.
The Italian full grain bark tanned leather is crafted in Florence by artisan tanners. At this family owned tannery they still practice the ancient method of tanning with bark from mimosa and chestnut trees rather than chemicals to slowly transform the hides into leather. The slow process of bark tanning yields a leather with a smell and patina reminiscent of a time past.
The buckles are solid brass or stainless steel.
Natural leather will be kept in good supple condition and last longer if it is treated from time to time with a good quality Hide Food and dressed with a liquid wax. Polish with a horsehair brush.
