The Oak Bark Leather Belt is a substantial traditional belt made from heavy hide 4-5mm thick.
Our Oak Bark leather belt is a casual belt that looks great with jeans, cords and chinos, the belt is packaged in a gift box with the the story of its making on the sleeve.
It is made in Devon using leather from a local tannery, the last of its kind in Europe. Oak bark tanning transforms the hide of a Devon cow into leather using only the bark of the English oak tree. No chemicals are used in this process.
The buckles are cast in sand in a foundry in Walsall, West Midlands.
Tanner Bates are traditional leatherworkers. Everything you see is made by us by hand in our leather workshop in Dartington, South Devon.
The Oak Bark Leather belts are available in brown only.
The leather has a full grain finish which means that every blemish or scar on the cows skin will be present on the finished hide and apparent on the finished product. The hides are dyed by hand at the tannery with an aniline dye. This process allows the grain and all the individual markings on the cows skin to show through. The dye is absorbed into the hide in an irregular way so giving a unique appearance to every belt. No two are exactly the same.
Your belt can be personalised on the inside in matt black with a message or your choice up to 12 characters or spaces. Note that the message will be hidden when the belt is worn.
Tanner Bates Oak bark leather belts are special. Gradually, over the years, the tanneries that make this leather have disappeared until now there is only one left in Europe. As for the buckles, we have been able to find only one foundry in this country using the traditional sand casting process. Because there is a chance that these belts could become history we number each one and keep a log of the purchase.
Our belts are made from tough oak bark tanned hides originally made for bridles and harnesses.Oak Bark Tanned Leather has a long tradition in this country which modern industry has left far behind. There is, however, one tannery left nestling in the Devon hills powered by a waterwheel producing the very best bridle and harness leather using oak bark from the Lake District. Oak bark contains the necessary tannins to transform Devon cowhides into leather. Just 3 things, oak bark, Devon river water and time produce a very special leather that is prized throughout the world.
Natural leather needs feeding from time to time (more often in a dry hot environment). Apply a lavish dose of Tanner Bates Hide Food every 6 months to ensure long and supple service. A complimentary tub of Hide Food is supplied with every belt.

Width 1.25 or 1.5 inches. Length = trouser size. 30" - 44"
How to find your size
We measure our belts by trouser size so thats one way you can order.
Alternatively, to be more accurate:
1. Measure on an existing belt the distance between the point where the leather meets the buckle to the hole you use all the time = distance 1
2. Deduct 2" or 5cm
3. Distance 1 less 2" or 5cm = Trouser Size
