Also known as bachelor's button, it is a beautiful, easy to grow, wildflower, native to the UK, that blends wonderfully into wildlife gardens, meadows, and cottage garden styles. They are rich in nectar and ideal for bees and cut flower arrangements or sprinkle the petals over salads, omelettes and pasta too!
Globe Thistle
Echinops ritro
The prickly-looking spikes on this fantastic drumstick-shaped plant are tiny individual florets, which open in a gorgeous steely-blue colour. The flowers will be covered with butterflies and bees throughout the summer and autumn, with long-lasting architectural seed heads to follow.
Purpletop vervain
Verbena bonariensis
Bees love the multitudes of rose-purple flowers between June and October, which are held in clusters atop elegant tall stems. Although it’s a tender perennial plant it loves to self-seed, making it fantastic for wildlife gardeners.
