Must have winter accessories

We know what you’re thinking, it’s REALLY cold out there. But the good news is that you don’t need to hide under your duvet to stay warm. The right cosy winter accessories can make all the difference. And, you don’t need to compromise on style either. From personalised gloves to toasty snoods and the fluffiest socks and even stylish handkerchiefs, read on to discover how to accessorize in style this winter.

Winter hats and hoods

Recently we’ve seen a real trend in women’s hats for balaclava-style hoods like this gorgeous snood from Studio Hop. Prints and patterns with colour contrasts have also continued to be popular whether it’s bold stripes or beanies in bright colours. We’ve also got dreamy gloves, scarves and hat sets if you want that matching look.

For men’s hats, there are so many fun ways to personalise them and make them totally your own, whether it’s baseball caps or beanies. These colourful beanies from Manchester-based brand, Rock on Ruby, can be customised with your initials and you can even pick what colour you want. Or you can go for a beanie based on your fave sport like this England rugby bobble hat. Nice.

Winter gloves

Whether you’re looking for winter gloves for men or women, there are so many different styles to choose from whether you want the warmest or you’re more concerned about them looking pretty (which is very valid). First you’ll want to think about what you’re using them for, whether it’s for cold winter drives, walks with your pup or when you’re commuting to work.

How to choose gloves for the winter

As we mentioned a few seconds ago, when you’re using your gloves plays a big part in what pair you should go for. For example, if you’re often on your phone when you’re out and about, fingerless gloves or ones that are touch screen friendly are a necessity. You can also get gloves that convert from being normal gloves to fingerless ones, too, if you’re worried about your fingers getting too cold.

If keeping warm is your main criteria, wool or cashmere are perfect as they keep all the warmth in. And, for driving, most people prefer the feel of leather or vegan leather gloves as they give you more grip and control.

Winter scarves

When it comes to men’s and women’s scarves, there are so many fun patterns and styles to choose from. And, thanks to our creative small brands there are lots of amazing personalised options, too, from adding your initials to your birth flower. For women, there’s also been a recent trend in skinnier scarf styles, think triangle scarves and long thin scarves like this beauty

Patterns are still incredibly popular as they help to add colour and interest to your outfit as most people tend to have darker or black coats that need a bit of brightening up. Think classic houndstooth, checkerboards and colour blocks. Brb, just adding all of those to our basket.

How to wear a scarf for winter

Of course, you can just wrap a scarf around your neck. But, there are lots of different ways to style men’s and women’s scarves, from draping it loosely around to knotting it to keep all the lovely warmth in. One simple but effective way to tie your scarf is by doing a ‘Parisian knot’. For this, fold your scarf in half and wrap it around your neck. Then thread the loose bits of your scarf through the loop on the other end and pull tight. Easy peasy.

For longer scarves, there’s the ‘twice around’ which is perfect for keeping the warmth in. For this knot, drape the scarf around your neck with one side half the length of the other. Then take the longer side and wrap it twice around. And ta-da, you’re done!

Winter socks

While your socks probably won’t be seen on winter walks, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun with them, whether it’s picking a fun pattern or a bright colour. But if keeping warm is your main concern, it’s key to pick fabrics that’ll keep your toes nice and toasty. More on that below plus our top men’s and women’s sock picks.

What are the warmest socks for winter?

For walking, a toasty pair of socks is an essential. If you’re often hiking or wearing walking boots, a pair of wool socks is a great choice as wool is both durable and warm. Merino wool is also great, not only because it’s lovely and soft, but because it locks in the warmth in winter and keeps your feet cool in summer. When looking for a pair of merino socks, a blend with spandex like these ones from Top Dog London are ideal as it helps make the socks more durable.

If you’re more interested in how your socks look and want a pair that really stand out from the crowd, you’ll love United Oddsocks who specialise in fun, colourful designs. Drag queen socks? Yes, please. We also love these nordic-style, hand knitted wool socks from Paper High that are bound to make you smile and will keep your toes nice and toasty, too.
