About

Bespoke sustainable textiles

ELKA is our woven textile and natural dyeing studio based in Hampshire.

I'm the weaver (Ellie), and my mum, Claudia, is the natural dyer.

I spent a large part of my childhood living abroad and travelling. The vibrant markets of the Middle and Far East triggering my passion for colour, texture and pattern and this influence is expressed through my textiles.

I completed both a BA in Textile Design, specialising in woven textiles, and MA in Design for Textile Futures at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, graduating in 2006.

Struggling to find truly sustainable yarns, and building on a lifelong interest in textiles and natural dyeing, mum started working with me in 2018.

Sustainability for us is a way of life, from how we live our day to day lives, to how we run our business.

We design and make ethical and sustainable products causing as little environmental impact as possible.

We hope that this passion for our environment and for design, shows though in our work.

Love, hard work and attention to detail.

Handweaving is the definition of a labour of love.

Every single thread goes through numerous processes in its journey to becoming a finished fabric.

To give a very general idea, to make a standard size scarf, from thread on bobbins, to a finished product, takes around a day and a half.

First and foremost, we make because we have a passion for creating practical, sustainable and beautiful (we hope) products.
