hello

Welcome to the home of squiggly lines and wibbly splodges ~ custom made, specially for you

draw the line is all about celebrating the special stuff in life with products that are themselves special: completely unique original paintings, handmade to order.

Behind the brand is me, Gaby, a London-based illustrator, determined to spread a little joy with my wonky pictures and blobs of paint.

I work from photographs and client specifications to create stylised ink and watercolour portraits of homes, pets and cuddly toys. I also offer custom 'special place' paintings, so my clients can celebrate and commemorate the pockets of the planet that they treasure most, from graduation and wedding venues, to local pubs or beloved holiday spots.

I produce illustrations, not fine-art portraits, so my priority is always to capture personality over an exact likeness. This allows me to create freer, more stylish images which are completely distinct from any photographs of the same subject. That said, I do welcome customer input about the specific look and feel of an artwork, and will always try my hardest to fulfil requests!

how it began

draw the line first reared its little head on holiday in Florence in 2014. I'd spent the first half of the trip watching my travel companion sketch her way to stardom among the locals, gathering hordes of crinkly-eyed Italian grandpas, all clamouring to see their tomato markets and espresso cafes appear in ink and watercolour. Naturally, I grew quite jealous of it all and decided to try my luck.

I was a long way off crowd-gathering but I found there was something so GOOD about putting pen to paper. Within a few years, I was drawing and painting nearly every day, perched on city curbs or on grassy tufts out in the country. Without me even noticing it, my sketchbook had become my most trusty comrade and my work had settled into an illustrative style, full of colour and personality.

Now, I have the joy of painting for other people - of making something special out of their moments and spaces. It’s not quite the crowds of Italian grandpa’s that I was after. But it’s not half bad!
