Welcome to DoodlePippin

The joy of colour and pattern!

I'm Ruth - an English artist specialising in 'millefiori'. This ancient technique creates beautiful kaleidoscopic patterns in glass and clay, which form the basis of all my designs.

Working from a garden studio in Reigate, Surrey, I focus on creating unique pieces that glow with colour and pattern - an elegant way to add some personality and character to any space.

My range now includes ceramic tiles, bone china mugs, worktop protectors, stationery, prints, fabric and homewares. And my work is in collections (and kitchens!) all over the world, from California to Hong Kong and the Australian Gold Coast.

A lot of my designs feature animals and plants - something I've always been passionate about. (My degree was in Zoology - that's just 'biology' without the boring plant bit!),

And I have a lifelong love of the glorious 19th Century designs of William Morris, William de Morgan and Morris & Co, so a lot of my patterns hark back to the wallpaper, tiles and fabric of this period.

Taking the long way round...

I started DoodlePippin in an old lawnmower shed in 2015. My kids were tiny - returning to my hectic journalism career in London seemed an impossibility.

So I fell back on my original craft skill - playing with clay! I specialise in "millefiori". This ancient technique has been around since at least the 6th Century (millefiori beads were found in the Anglo Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo - yes, the one featured in the recent film 'The Dig!').

Millefiori creates amazing kaleidoscopic patterns in coloured clay. But it's a frustrating medium as all the patterns are unique and can't ever be repeated. So I take high-res images of the original millefiori canes and use the digital version to create my range of 'prints' - fabric, ceramics, stationery and homewares.

Since 2015 DoodlePippin has grown a lot. I now work from a purpose built studio at the end of a long garden filled with chickens and fruit trees. My studio assistant Jude and I can be found several days per week making and packing orders, and the rest of the time is spent mucking about with clay.

  • "Absolutely gorgeous. A friendly seaside greyish-blue, just like pictured. Arrived well-packed and is a daily pleasure to use. I do not actually use it as a chopping board, but find it the perfect home for basically anything while cooking; from spoons, hot pot lids or items food. #thx"
