Amelia Ilangaratne is an artist and illustrator based in London. Working in pen, ink and watercolour, Amelia uses traditional hand drawing methods to create delicate and whimsical animal illustrations.
Taking inspiration from the natural world, her artwork explores dreamlike scenarios involving the animal kingdom. Depictions of the ordinary animal in surreal circumstances, such as an elephant being carried effortlessly by a butterfly, give the drawings a unique and playful twist. Elephants are a signature feature within the Amelia's work; the creatures are a particular favourite of the artist's as they remind her of childhood trips to Sri Lanka, her country of origin. Other influences range from the illustrations of children’s literature, to ancient medieval bestiaries and traditional Japanese and Chinese art.
Amelia has exhibited at Gallery Munro House, Leeds, and the Peter Ingram Gallery, Apsley. Her illustrations have also been featured in the pages of Company Magazine.
