Pegasus, in Greek mythology, was an immortal, winged horse which sprang from the neck of the beheaded Gorgon Medusa. Tamed by Bellerophon, they rode into battle against the fire-breathing Chimera. Later attempting to fly to heaven, Zeus caused him to buck throwing Bellerophon back down to earth in disgrace. Pegasus then winged his way on to Olympus where he became the thunderbolt-bearer of Zeus.
