How much should you spend on a wedding gift?

Wondering how much to spend on a wedding gift? We’ve got you covered with our handy guide. Spoiler alert: Wedding gifts don’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Is £50 enough for a wedding gift?

Of course it is! £50 is considered a very generous amount to spend on a wedding gift if you can afford it. And, actually there are meaningful wedding gifts for literally any budget. Just take a look at our under £40 wedding gifts for some inspo.

What should my budget for a wedding gift be?

At the end of the day, your budget should be based on what you can afford rather than what everyone else is spending. But a good rule of thumb is to think about how close you are to the couple. It’ll really vary based on whether they’re your bestie or your neighbour’s second cousin, once removed.

For close friends and family, some people may spend £100 or over, whereas for more distant relatives,  friends or colleagues, the budget may look a bit more like £25-£50. But it’s perfectly acceptable to send a small token or a thank-you card, instead. If the wedding is abroad and you’ve spent money to be there, there will be less expectation to give a generous gift, too.

All that said, regardless of how much you spend, we think it’s the thought that ultimately makes for the best wedding gifts. A heartfelt, meaningful present will usually mean a lot more to the couple than something that has no thought in it at all. So if your budget is on the smaller side, don’t worry, you can still find a gift they’ll LOVE.

Should I give cash as a wedding gift?

Usually, the couple will (politely) let you know whether they want gifts or cash towards their honeymoon pot. And, some couples will be happy with either. But there’s definitely been a bit of a shift away from traditional wedding gifts to cash. After all, weddings cost a small fortune!

If gifts are on the cards, you could pick out something personalised for that extra meaningful touch, whether it’s a fun couple print or bespoke luggage tags for their honeymoon. If you’re scratching your head about what to buy, you could just get them a gift card so they can choose exactly what they want.

If they’re not really into materialistic things, an experience can be an amazing option instead and we’ve got lots to choose from all across the UK. Axe throwing, anyone?
