I'll have you in stitches one hoop at a time

I’m Suze and I’m the face/hands behind House O’Fellows.

I have been known to sew on trains and planes, wherever and whenever I can really, but you will usually find me sewing from my home in Bedfordshire...whilst chain drinking tea and usually when my 2 little ones have gone to bed!

I have always had different creative outlets, mainly machine sewing, hand lettering and drawing and although I had dabbled in the past I started to hand embroider more seriously at the start of 2017. I had lots of drawings and designs and wanted to make them into something more, I wondered what they would look like if I stitched them instead and so I combined lettering, drawing and stitch and immediately fell in love with hand embroidery. I find that it really calms me especially if I’m ever feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

I like to create art that makes people laugh and smile, from hoops with a made up pun or funny and inspirational phrases that are relateable, to something really unique and personalised that people can treasure forever.

I’ve always had compliments on the style of my writing; it’s something that I’ve worked hard on developing and making my own. I love hand lettering and when I combine that with stitch I think it really elevates a whole piece. My embroidery techniques are constantly evolving, at the moment I am really loving thread painting and rug hooking techniques, I love the texture that you get, and love experimenting and putting my own modern twist on old techniques. You will find that I stitch exactly how I draw so expect to see a lot of detailed line drawings styles in my hoops, I also like to incorporate both printed or hand painted and hand sewn elements in my work.

I take my inspiration from my day to day life, from the music and podcasts I listen to, what I’m reading or watching on Netflix, what I chat about with my friends and family and just generally what I’m interested in the moment, that’s why I always carry round a sketch book with me to jot down and sketch ideas.
