Our natural leather binding is made from either Oak Bark Tanned leather from Devon or Italian cowhide from Florence- both family run tanneries where they still use the ancient methods of tanning with bark from oak, mimosa and chestnut trees rather than chemicals to slowly transform the hides into leather. The slow process of bark tanning yields a leather with a smell and patina reminiscent of a time past.
The Oak Bark tanned leather is unusual. Each one is different. Dont choose this if you want a uniform finish. The oak bark tanned leather has been in pits in the ground for almost 2 years at our Devon tannery, soaking in a liquor of tree barks and river water. This is leather made in the old fashioned way. Dyed and finished by hand. The leather is full grain meaning that the natural appearance of the cows skin with all its imperfections and blemishes are apparent. This is leather bursting with character and no two are the same.
Tanner Bates products are different. We are hand makers, leather specialists, a small business of 3 makers - all apprentice trained in our Devon workshop. Our roots are in traditional equestrian leatherwork and our techniques and hand tools are the same as those used by saddlers and bridlemakers for generations.
We pay attention to details especially our edges which are sanded, sealed and burnished. This edging detail, which can only be achieved by hand with time and concentration, is only found on traditional hand made leatherwork. This technique and the quality of our leather is what makes Tanner Bates products different from other mass produced and factory made items.
Made from Italian leather naturally tanned in the traditional way with plant extracts.
To care for your Tanner Bates Leather goods apply an occasional dose of Hide Food to keep your leather supple and long lasting. If it gets wet first let it dry out naturally, then apply Hide Food to stop the leather drying out.
