Lonicera japonica ‘Purpurea’ is a cultivated variety of Japanese honeysuckle selected for its dramatic foliage, strong growth, and classic honeysuckle fragrance. Supplied in a 3-litre nursery container, this plant is well established and ready to grow quickly once planted into garden soil or a large outdoor pot. It is a semi-evergreen climber, meaning it retains much of its foliage throughout winter, providing ongoing colour, coverage, and structure in the garden.
The most striking feature of ‘Purpurea’ is its foliage. New growth emerges in rich shades of bronze and purple, creating a bold contrast against walls, fences, and garden structures. As the leaves mature, they deepen to green while retaining darker purple tones, giving the plant a layered, multi-toned appearance. This makes it attractive even when not in flower, adding texture and depth throughout the growing season.
Lonicera japonica ‘Purpurea’ grows to approximately 4–6 metres in height with a spread of 1.5–2 metres when trained on suitable supports. Supplied in a 3-litre container measuring around 18–20 cm in height and diameter, it establishes quickly once planted. Its tubular flowers measure approximately 3–5 cm long and are produced in clusters from June to August. The semi-evergreen foliage forms a dense leafy cover, making it ideal for fences, pergolas, trellises, arbours, and walls where colour, fragrance, and privacy are desired.
