Clematis ‘Blue Angel’ is a Viticella-group clematis celebrated for its durability, vigour, and long-lasting floral display. Originally bred in Poland and internationally recognised for its outstanding performance, it has earned the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, making it a trusted choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and reliability.
The flowers are medium to large, typically bearing four to six petals that open into a soft, open star shape. The petals are a refined lavender-blue, often with a silvery undertone that becomes more pronounced in bright daylight. One of the defining characteristics of ‘Blue Angel’ is the gently crinkled, ruffled edges of the petals, which give the flowers a feather-light, almost floating appearance. This delicate detailing adds texture and movement, particularly when the blooms sway in a summer breeze.
Clematis ‘Blue Angel’ typically reaches a mature height of approximately 2.5–3 metres, with a spread of around 1 metre. The flowers measure approximately 8–12cm across and are produced in generous numbers from mid-summer through to early autumn. Its vigorous yet graceful growth habit makes it ideal for covering fences, pergolas, arches, and trellises, or for scrambling through established shrubs in mixed borders. Despite its size, it remains easy to manage and responds well to annual pruning, providing reliable vertical coverage without becoming overwhelming.
