Part of the last British Airways jumbo jet will become a tourist attraction after its new owner said he "didn't want to see it crushed into cans". The top deck of the Boeing 747 has been moved from the Cotswolds to take up residence at Salford's City Airport. It has been saved from the scrap-heap and brought to the city by self-confessed "aviation geek" Drew Hanna. He said he had saved it "for people to enjoy" because they were "sad when the 747s were being scrapped".

  • You can fly a plane and land at any airport in the world... without even leaving Manchester. I tried it out for myself at The Deck 747, based at Barton Aerodrome, that offers a truly unique - if not slightly nerve-racking experience - at controlling a real former Boeing 747 from the cockpit. The truly impressive 180 degree simulator display wraps around the front of the aircraft, giving you the view of a pilot as you soar through the skies.

  • With the number of 747s in the sky continuing to decrease, it is always good to hear of more being preserved. One of the last British Airways Boeing 747-400 aircraft was partly saved from scrap during 2022. The upper deck and cockpit sections have been preserved and are now in use in Manchester as an events space and working flight simulator. Simple Flying takes a look at how this was achieved.

  • WHEN asked to think of their dream wedding venue, you'd expect most people conjure up images of picturesque churches, stunning stately homes or even a beach on a tropical island. You'd be forgiven then for being surprised if someone were to say the deck of a Boeing 747 aircraft. But that is exactly what is on offer at The Deck 747 in Barton Aerodrome, Manchester. The events centre and flight simulator is now fully licensed to host weddings with up to 120 guests
