These fair trade storage baskets are handwoven from local sisal fibres by a member of one of four rural women's weaving cooperatives in South Western Kenya. These fibres are hand-dyed outside in vats of boiling water, then hung to dry naturally before the weaving work begins.

The women of these cooperatives are mainly subsistence farmers, and so weaving work takes place primarily during the dry seasons when farming work slows down. The age-old craft of basket weaving brings the opportunity for families to earn a precious second income during times of drought.
