These fair trade storage baskets are handwoven from indigenous sisal grass by a member of one of four rural women's weaving cooperatives in South Western Kenya. These sustainably-sourced fibres are hand-dyed outdoors in vats of boiling water before the weaving begins.
The weavers behind these beautiful baskets are primarily subsistence farmers, so basket weaving takes place during the dry seasons when crops are more likely to fail and livestock suffer. Basket weaving offers these families the chance to earn an essential second income.
