Bringing Colour to Life

Welcome to my store of unusual gifts & beautiful things for the home. They're handmade by artisans, primarily in India and sales support their traditional livelihoods.

Each product is unique, reflecting the creativity of individuals who share a piece of their hearts and the colour of their souls at Suzie Bidlake

When I went to India in my twenties I was particularly struck by the transformative power of colour. In situations of deprivation and challenge, the vibrant colours of the clothes, the place, its customs and its designs had a way of lifting people to a world beyond. A world of joy, of peace and of hope.

Now I’m joining with artisan groups to bring some Indian colour to our lives in the UK and, at the same time, support their livelihoods through their colourful creations.

I believe in the power of colour to make a difference to the way we feel and in the glory of feeling free in expressing who we are. That’s what this brand is all about.

The talented artisans I work with in India typically live in rural clusters, practising traditional art forms that have been dying out in the face of recent demand for faster, cheaper, mass-produced goods.

They live right across India, from Maharashtra to Rajasthan, from Chanderi to Gujurat.

Women do much of the work; often it's a family affair.

The paints they use are natural plant dyes which reduce their toxin exposure and the risk of irritation to the skin.

Every sale from Suzie Bidlake supports their livelihoods.

Thank you for your support!

My Menopausal Start-up “No! Don’t call it that!” she shrieked. The woman interviewing me about my new business physically recoiled in horror. It wasn’t my company name she’d reacted to so forcefully but the way I’d described it. “It’s my menopausal start-up,” I’d told her breezily. For me, that meant the start of something new at a time of life (57) when all my life experience and new-found sense of freedom could be brought to bear...
