Product description

A two-day knife making course New to 2021 our two-day Cu-Mai Knife Making package.

Variations

Our Cu-Mai package is two-day experience that will cover the basics of making pattern-welded steel or more commonly known as Cu-Mai. Cu-Mai is an amazing material that produces a unique and stunning patten like nothing else.

To produce your Cu-Mai billet this will involve a process of layering two sheets of copper between three sheets of carbon steel. Knives have of course been made by blacksmiths for thousands of years. We are dedicated to sharing our passion, knowledge and experience of a craft as old as civilisation itself. Our expert team will guide and support you through each process in the designing and making of your own Cu-Mai knife.

We have welcomed chefs from all over the world who have wanted to make their very own unique blade with us. All of our experience packages are taught in a relaxed and friendly environment where you will be made to sweat but will leave at the end of the day with a blade you will cherish forever – along with a special memory and story to be told.

Oldfield Forge is the perfect place to start for anyone interested in knife making, or for those Forged In Fire fans who would like to put their skills and enthusiasm to the test.

All of our vouchers are valid for 18 months from the date of purchase, with the Forge remaining open 7 days a week under Covid-19 restrictions. Day One is spent learning how to make your own pattern-welded copper & steel billet. You will learn about the ancient art of pattern welding and begin the process of carefully heating the copper to weld in between the high carbon steel. A member of team will carefully work alongside you to achieve the desired pattern. Once the billet has been formed, the exciting reveal of the pattern is made when a rough-cut shape of the knife is made and ground away.

Day Two is when it all gets very exciting and the final stages of making your Cu-Mai Knife come together. Any final detail on the blade is made just before you learn how to heat treat it and polish the blade. It is at this stage when the true unique pattern is revealed.

Breakdown of What is Included:

• Making up a billet (stacked layers of alternating copper and steel to be forge welded together)

• Forge welding using a hydraulic press

• Manipulations (grinding or forging into the bar to manipulate layers)

• Etching to reveal the pattern

During your time with us, you can enjoy lunch either in the country air in our picnic area or, if you prefer, take advantage of our Forge Den or Woodlands Huts. We do welcome family and friends to join you for lunch and to share in your experience as a blacksmith. There is choice of hot drink or cold drinks on site, as well as a choice of a cake or a snack from the tuck shop. We work with a number of B&B’s, hotels & campsites who we know will look after you during your time with us.
