Our Tips to Embrace Al Fresco Dining at Home
What is al fresco dining?
Al Fresco is Italian for ‘in the fresh air,’ which is something the Italians probably don’t even need a phrase for. But here in Blighty, it’s an occasion. It’s the time of year when it is officially acceptable to eat outside. In your garden, in a courtyard, in a park, or just leaning very carefully out of your window. Looking for some outdoor dining ideas? Read on.
How to set up your garden for al fresco dining
It may be warm(ish), but the sun still sets at exactly 7:36pm (thank you, Google). So if you’re planning an Al Fresco evening, and want to actually see what you’re eating, fairy lights, lanterns and candles are your friends.

Get some comfy seating
Rustic wooden chairs might look stylish, but no-one can sit on them comfortably for over 12 minutes. If you’re after some outdoor dining decor ideas that add the cosy factor, why not add some luxurious, outdoor-friendly cushions to your seating and make sure everyone stays long enough for dessert.
The TABLESCAPE
Al Fresco dining has a different vibe to eating dinner on your lap on the sofa. Also, you’re probably further away from your kitchen than normal. So make sure your table is prepped - with colourful tableware, stylish coasters, charcuterie boards and some lovely mugs for the inevitable hot choc.
What if…. the temperature drops
We’re not gonna lie, the weather in the UK is, well, unpredictable. And unlike our Mediterranean friends, it never really gets hot enough to last beyond 7pm. So let’s take inspiration from our Scandinavian friends and add some cosy blankets to the back of the chairs. And if you’re feeling extra chilly, think about some outdoor heating. But be warned, fire pits can make people go a bit wild. In a good way.
