Lapis Lazuli is a gemstone and predominantly found in the Middle East. A major source is from Afghanistan where the ancient mines are located in the rugged mountains of the Hindu Kush. It is also found in Lake Baikal in Russia and the Chilean Andes.
Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin word lapis, meaning 'stone', and the Arabic word 'azul', which means blue. Some cultures believe it is the universal symbol of wisdom and truth.
It was widely used in ancient times and even formed the funeral mask of Tutankhamun.
