Clematis macropetala, often referred to as the Downy Clematis, is one of the most charming and resilient spring-flowering clematis species available. Native to woodland and mountainous regions, it brings a naturally elegant, slightly wild character to the garden that contrasts beautifully with more formal, large-flowered hybrids.
Flowering from April to May, this early-season climber produces a generous display of nodding, bell-shaped blooms in shades of violet-blue. Each flower is composed of multiple slender, pointed tepals that overlap to form a semi-double structure, giving the blooms a soft, feathery texture. The flowers hang gracefully from the stems, moving gently in the breeze and creating a romantic, woodland-inspired effect.
Clematis macropetala typically reaches a height of 2.5–4 metres with a spread of around 1–1.5 metres. Its bell-shaped flowers usually measure approximately 5–7 centimetres across and are followed by large, feathery seed heads that add significant visual impact. Its moderate but vigorous growth makes it ideal for covering fences, arches, pergolas and north-facing walls without becoming overpowering.
