Clematis Piilu is a hardy deciduous climber bred for maximum beauty in compact spaces. This exceptional Group 2 clematis variety originates from Estonia and is renowned for its unique dual-flowering habit, producing profuse double or semi-double flowers in late spring, followed by a second wave of paler single blooms in summer and early autumn. The showy flowers are a delightful mix of soft mauve-pink petals with a bold, red central stripe, creating an eye-catching display across any support.
This clematis is grown in a premium 3-litre nursery pot, allowing for robust root development and healthy transplanting. The pot is filled with a nutrient-rich, well-draining compost that supports long-term growth. The plant itself is established, with a healthy rootball and initial vertical growth already present, giving gardeners a head start in the season.
Clematis Piilu is a naturally compact climbing plant that reaches a mature height of 1.5 to 2 metres, with a spread of approximately 1 metre, making it perfect for smaller gardens, urban patios, and balconies. Its restrained growth makes it easy to manage and highly suitable for training on vertical structures such as trellises, arches, obelisks, or pergolas.
The plant is supplied in a large 3-litre nursery pot, which is approximately 17–19cm in diameter, containing fertile, well-draining compost to support vigorous root development. Once planted, it quickly establishes and begins its seasonal growth.
Because this clematis blooms on both old and new wood, it’s important to prune lightly in early spring, just above a strong pair of buds, to encourage healthy branching and multiple flowering stems. For best results, plant with the crown 5–8cm below soil level and provide a shaded root zone with mulch or groundcover plants.
