We chose organic wine as we want to lead by example and support the wineries and people behind them making labour intensive transition to farming organically.
The most basic definition of organic wine is wine made from organically farmed grapes. Generally excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. While wine naturally produces some sulphites, they cannot be added!
This lack of manipulation in the field and cellar leads to a wine that is arguably more real, and definitely more natural. Organic wine is most often the best expression of both the grape and also the terroir, the land and environment where grown.
In general, organic wine grapes are much healthier and therefore produce heartier skins and higher concentrations of all of those good for you anthocyanins and antioxidants, including polyphenols and cardio-friendly resveratrol. Certified organic wines also have less sugar on average and don’t contain potentially harmful cellar additives such as flavouring agents or caramel colouring.
But what really means so much to us is that there are real, tangible and lasting benefits to the environment and the farmers as a result of transitioning to organic farming practices. Specifically, organic vines tend to need less water applied, because soils are built up with compost and contain more organic matter, which holds water far better. Organic vines have been proven more resilient against increasing droughts and temperature spikes.
By using less water and not tainting the existing supply with chemicals the vineyard workers are doing their part to leave the earth as healthy, if not healthier, than they found it.
Organic certifications have guidelines in place to ensure ethical treatment of employees from those picking the grapes to those stomping on the grapes. By drinking organic wines, you’re supporting independent families and their staff.
Ninety percent of the world’s cocoa is grown on small family farms by around 6 million farmers. With the proper care, cocoa trees begin to yield pods at peak production levels by the fifth year and they can continue at this level for 10 years.
To be able to create our Fairtrade chocolates in the UK, Coco Loco source their cocoa beans from the Dominican Republic, where cocoa is grown by 40,000 small-scale cocoa growers. Fairtrade supports farmers in the Dominican Republic; schools have been built and repaired, with scholarships and equipment provided to students from poorer families. A new IT centre has been built to help children with schoolwork in the cooperative where they source our cocoa beans from. Simply put, Fairtrade makes things better and it’s a simple way to make a difference to the lives of the people who grow the things we love – and we really do love chocolate, especially when the chocolate is Fairtrade!
