twofolde tufted carpet cushion made in Brighton

About twofolde

A collaboration in the making for 20 years

We are Andy & Ben at twofolde and we create hand crafted tufted carpet cushions and wall hangings, alongside collaged linen cushions and homewares from our studio in Brighton.

Each piece references Ben's Mum's sketchbook work and drawings from the 1990's which we abstract through collage and stitch, making this a collaboration in the making for 20 years.

After graduating, we both worked in the fashion and textiles industry providing us with the knowledge and skillset to begin developing our tufting practice. After working in the fast paced industries, it was important for us to take a step back and begin working on our own slow, authentic and methodic processes. This was to try to minimise waste, but also to create work that we are both proud of and love.

Our work is very observational & often focuses on ideas of referencing the past whilst abstracting it to become something new.

The environment is at the forefront of our practice so it was so important to use all natural yarns and fabrics for everything that we create. We have discovered the best vintage fabric and yarn mills in the UK, which means that most of our materials are dead-stock from industry & give our pieces their unique finish.

How is it made

Slow design from start to finish

Each of our pieces are handmade in Brighton. Each of our tufted works are made using a hand held loop pile tufting gun, dead-stock wool yarn & dead-stock Irish linen sourced from a vintage market behind our studio.

Each design is abstracted from Ben's Mum's sketchbook work through paper collage before we sketch the design on the tufting cotton backing cloth. We then tuft the design using the natural yarns before finishing it by hand and stitching it up on a vintage Singer industrial sewing machine.

For our collaged linen pieces, abstracted shapes are cut out of dead-stock Irish linen which are then stitched onto a linen base. The stitch lines echo the fluid drawn lines of Ben's Mum's work in the 1990s, from paper to fabric.

Reviews

  • "I am absolutely loving the cushion I bought - workmanship, material quality, and the design which somehow straddles mid-century design and abstract expressionism and the story of your mother's sketchbook. Thank you! "
