About Me

Turning a dream into a reality

I found clay when I started evening classes in 2016 as a way to help with the dark winter nights. I immediately fell in love – I had found my creative infatuation, something I had been searching many years for.

Over the next couple of years, I started to daydream about what if this could be my next career, it was so different to the worlds of retail management and finance, I'd been in before. Then 2020 & 2021 and the changes experienced by everyone provided the impetus to go for it and in January 2022, Suzie McDaniel Ceramics became a full-time passion.

I work in a shared studio in Old Trafford, just outside Manchester city centre but I live near a canal on the edge of the Peak District. This is where I get a lot of my inspiration, surrounded by nature and noticing the changes each season brings.

How It's made.

How it's made

Hand made, hand-painted ceramic pieces for your home.

I hand-build or slip-cast using self-produced moulds to create my work.

The pieces are usually decorated either by hand-painting each piece – so whilst I might revisit a design several times, they can never be exactly the same and the work you receive is totally unique and a complete one-off. I use ceramic underglazes to create my designs before being fired twice in the kiln up to 1250°C.

Alternatively, I use my hand-painted watercolour and ink illustrations to create my decoration and these are applied by firing for a third time in the kiln.

I primarily work with porcelain clay; I love the translucency and the clarity it possesses. It allows the colours and my illustrations to really shine. When pieces that can also be used as tealight/candle holders are lit, the body of the work produces the most cosy, homely glow.

I love the alchemy of clay and I love that every day I get to essentially turn liquid ‘mud’ into a piece that can be cherished and loved by the recipient.
