Made in Britain
Balboa is a fabulously flattering waistcoat to wear which you make from our 100% pure British alpaca yarn. Great for formal or casual wear.
Knitting is the most popular craft hobby in the UK. This wonderful pastime is being taken up by celebrities, youngsters, people from both sexes and all ethnicities.
The Purl Alpaca Designs products are exclusive, design-led and upmarket. Our fleece is sourced from local breeders (and our own herd); it is hand sorted and graded before being made into yarn by a specialist spinning mill. Only the best quality is used and we blend the natural fibres to create our wonderful colour range. We don’t dye the yarn. Environmentally aware; even our packaging is made from recycled materials.
Balboa is an unusual waistcoat design; superb for protecting your neck and back against chilly evenings and is so light, you almost forget you are wearing it! Knitted on 7mm needles with Purl Alpaca DK yarn, Balboa grows quickly and the constant shaping and edge pattern makes it both interesting and fun to knit. The short-row shaping technique ensures the garment fits into the small of your back and each row includes the fabulous blackberry stitch border giving textured detail to the collar and edge.
Balboa waistcoat is knitted in Purl Alpaca DK and photographed in colours Alpaca Night and Alpaca Light.

Once returned as yarn, Kari-Helene Rane knits swatch samples of different stitches which in turn, inspire her to create a design which complements both the natural drape and lustre of the yarn, plus the intricacies of the stitch. With both tailoring and knitting as her specialist subjects, Kari-Helene’s designs make truly statement pieces.
The names for Purl Alpaca Designs are chosen from cria (baby alpacas) born to our own herd and alpacas at Houghton Hall Alpacas in Cambridgeshire. The fleece from this award winning herd makes our yarn.
Once made, we recommend hand-washing as the best way to ensure Balboa keeps shape and lasts for years. We do however provide Care Instructions which gives extra tips on how to look after your Purl Alpaca Design.
