A truly original, handmade rag rug wall art.
This exclusive rug, handmade in the Midlands, was inspired by the rug makers in my home town in the North East and we called our rugs Proddy rugs.
Women in my home town would make rugs, cutting up old clothes and fabric. The rugs would be made over several weeks and sometimes neighbours would come in and help. My grandmother would keep her frame in the kitchen and occasionally do a bit of 'prodding'. Rugs are constructed on hessian and are not encased in a backing, which allows the dirt to be beaten out. Before vacuum cleaners, our rugs would be put out on the washing line and energetically attacked with a carpet beater to release the dust and dirt.
The rugs started life in the 'best room', then went to the kitchen and as it got more worn, to the back door, then the compost heap! True recycling...
This wall art is unique. The fabrics and colours I have at the start of making a rug, define the size and design. The colours I had at the start of this rug reminded me of the mediterranean.
Because of the nature of the product and using recycled clothes it is not possible to make another. This wall art is original, unique, one-off rug.
This incredible soft and tactile rug is made from recycled t-shirts on a hessian backing, edged with a binding tape. It can be beaten to remove dust and dirt.
Many t-shirts were rescued in making this rug.
