About

Celebrating Life's Meaningful Moments

Whole in the Middle began with a simple idea: that a card is so much more than just a simple token, or an accompaniment to a gift. It can tell a story, capture a feeling, and help someone feel genuinely loved. I’m Anna, the designer and maker behind Whole in the Middle, and every card I create begins with that belief.

I started Whole in the Middle after discovering papercutting and falling in love with the craft. I began making papercut thank you cards after my first child was born – we had received so many wonderful gifts I wanted something really special to show my appreciation. This soon evolved into a collection of elegant, personalised papercut cards designed to celebrate life’s most important moments - birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, first days at school, and all the milestones in between.

From my home studio in Lancashire, I design, cut and finish each card with care. Every piece cut by laser and is finished by hand, using premium FSC certified papers chosen for their texture, quality and timeless feel. I believe that thoughtful design matters, and that the details — the cut, the materials, the way a name sits within a design — can turn a simple card into something truly special.

Whole in the Middle is rooted in connection. My designs are created to help people celebrate the moments that matter, whether that’s a big milestone or a quiet everyday joy. I love knowing that the cards I make become part of someone’s story: tucked into memory boxes, pinned on noticeboards, framed, or kept on shelves long after the celebration has passed.

Sustainability is also important to me. I work with eco friendly materials wherever possible, minimise waste in my studio, and create designs intended to be kept, not discarded.

Today, Whole in the Middle continues to grow, but the ethos remains the same: meaningful design, made with care. Whether you’re choosing a personalised card for someone special or discovering a new favourite design, I hope you find something that feels just right for the moment you’re celebrating.

I’ve always loved designing and making, but I never imagined it could become a full-time career. Coming from a more traditionally academic background, it just never seemed possible. However, after having our first baby, I found that my experiements with papercut cards turned into more than just a creative outlet, and gradually grew into Whole in the Middle.

In 2012, I was honoured to be Highly Commended in the Country Living Kitchen Table Talent Awards, and after a few years of balancing both worlds, I eventually left my “proper” job to focus on designing full time.

I now work from my small studio in Lancashire, just a short walk from the beach, supported by a wonderful network of friends and family. It means a great deal to know that the pieces I create become part of your celebrations — a small but meaningful contribution to moments you treasure.
