Smashing Chintz mosaics are individually made by Janine Nelson in her south London studio. Inspired by a mosaic pot that her great, great grandmother made, she uses broken, mainly flower patterned crockery, reassembled to form birds, hares, cows and other creatures (including urban animal life). Plates are used as a background for the mosaic fauna. Or a brooch clasp may be added so that the mosaic becomes wearable.
Smashing Chintz mosaics are decorative, intricate and have a great sense of fun. Each mosaic is individual. Suitable as a gift, for display in the home or worn to adorn a jacket or coat. Mosaics on plates can be hung on the wall either box-framed or as they are. They look good displayed on a shelf or dresser.
To complement the range of mosaics, vintage plates have been customised with the addition of animals and creatures using ceramic transfers. China has been chosen to reflect the seasons of the year. These upcycled plates are suitable for serving food as well as for display on a shelf or wall.
