Karibu! to my little online store
I began printmaking as a form of mediation to deal with my worries whilst I was fresh out of Uni & jobless. A way to help myself and others (my proceeds to various charities, a huge part of my beliefs- giving alms). This was my sole outlet to give my: Time, skill & whatever little income I had to buy the materials (paired with lots 'n' lots of love+encouragement from my Friend). Every time I print/cut a print I seem to be saying silent prayers and I think of the customer I am pulling a print for (and yes, of course I still worry: If they will like the print!).
I love to keep busy from my little studio off a busy street in North London. I was born and raised in Kenya and have a very 'Jua Kali'* attitude to what I make hence the recycling or 'upscaling' as they now call it. I experiment using recycled paper, fabrics as well as quality, ethically-sourced handmade papers (some even have bits of actual flowers in them!). I don't stock much as I like to prepare products when a customer requests, so every single piece ends up being a special treat from me to you! I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed making it!
My media are typography, letterpress, screen prints, wood cut, lino, pen and ink and water colours. My materials include handmade paper, recycled paper and fabrics or found materials and a whole lot of love and soul! *Jua Kali: 'Hot Sun' in Swahili. It is (was) a thriving industry in Kenya (when I was growing up), self-employed individuals making goods out of recycled metal/wood thus giving new life to old materials, providing functional + affordable goods.
