About
Emotive textiles for design conscious people
Nervous Stitch is the creation of Royal College of Art graduate, Jenny McHardy, my collection is knitted in bright and bold colour combinations of lambswool.
I am interested in the emotional connection between people and textiles so my designs have a nostalgic illustrative look as well as having a sense of humour, the beetle hot water bottle being my favourite piece, you either love it or freak out!
My products appeal to design conscious people who are interested in high quality products that are made in Scotland in small batches.
I try to produce as little textile waste as possible, I use up my fabric scraps to make the patchwork backing to my bunny pincushions and cat nip mice.
Handmade in Scotland
I gather inspiration for my designs from the animals I love and items I collect on my treasure hunting travels, I sketch and draw out my ideas before producing mood boards and knitting swatches.
Most of my products are knitted by myself on a hand-powered domestic knitting machine however just recently I have begun to work with a tiny knit factory in Shetland who knit my scarves on an industrial machine for me.
The products go through three stages of washing and finishing to produce a soft and tactile fabric, they are linked together on a hand operated linker with details and labels attached by hand.
I am passionate about knitting and keeping traditional skills alive, whilst adapting these skills so they stay current and relevant for today.
I also teach knit and mixed media workshops at university as part of my job as a constructed textiles technician.
