Prism of Starlings

Prism of Starlings

Prism of Starlings is a collection of design-led paper goods and illustrative work by Kirsty Baynham, established in 2011 and rebranded in 2013.

My prints are finished by hand, using a variety of processes - Giclée, silkscreen and lino print. The illustrations start out as ink paintings, drawn using calligraphy pens and coloured drawing inks. My imagery often encompasses geometrical elements, influenced by tribal textiles, Aztec and Navajo styles, and traditional, floral damasks.

My work is largely pattern-based, with an emphasis on the process of intricate patternmaking - both the mathematical and design elements combined. I am inspired by tessellations and symmetry, overlapping shapes observed in the natural world, and local wildlife. The illustrations depict primarily animal figures, which incorporate small, fantasy worlds within their framework. These hidden personalities are inspired by the character dualities which many living creatures possess, and their interweaving life paths.

My collection of design-led products is carefully illustrated and hand-made in my studio on the West coast of Scotland.
