    Product description

Roman-style black and green octopus marble mosaic. This unique, one of a kind friendly octopus is hand-crafted and can be sited indoors or outdoors.

Use this striking octopus mosaic indoors as a sink splashback in a bathroom, kitchen, studio, utility room or toilet. Outdoors you coud embellish your front or backstep for a stylish entrance, jazz up a paving slab or wall with subtle ancient style or add it to fountain, pool or shower (if you live in sunny climes).

The tesserae are fixed to a flexible fibreglass mesh which can be posiitoned vertically, horizontally or even curved in the usual tiling manner.

Add value and uniqueness to your home with this wonderful piece of stone art. Mosaics are like paintings in stone, that last a lifetime and beyond.

    Variations

This is the first stone mosaic made by artist Julia Brooks using the direct method of stone laying.

Each tile is hand cut using a hammer and hardie from Ravenna, Italy. The tesserae are carefully placed by hand, sometimes with tweezers, sometimes shaped with stone cutters, then glued to fibreglass mesh. It takes a long time to make a mosaic.

Around the octopus you can see a border in stone. This is called Andamento, which is a Roman technique that blends lines, colour and forms for a gentler effect on the eye.

The octopus design is hand drawn and unique. The tentacles are drawn flailing to create an interesting shape and fill the design space. The octopus is coloured darkly using green and black tiles to contrast with the beige background.

Instructions: the mosaic requires fixing to a surface, then grouting with a mid-brown or mid-grey grout. (White or dark grout is not suitable, as this will overpower the stone pattern with the gap pattern.) You can do this yourself or hire a tiling tradesman. The fibreglass mesh the mosaic is attached to is the same as you find in tiling stores for pool/small tiles. Polish it with beeswax or stone polish every now and then to enliven the colour of the natural stone.

If you would like to commission a different design or would like the size exact to your measurements, please message me. I'd be delighted to make a custom marble mosaic to suit your space.
