These rattles are hand crocheted in rural Bangladesh by women working for a non-profit fair trade organisation.
The organisation helps keep families together by providing employment in a village setting close to the women's homes rather than in a city. Mothers are able to stay with their babies and children and earn money to support them.
Firstly we have Olive the pink/orange octopus and Oliver the blue/green octopus. Olive and Oliver have huge eyes, a cheeky grin and eight legs (obviously) which are great for grabbing and chewing.
Next we have three monsters - Maude is purple, Mervin is green (and only has one eye) and Marvin is blue. Despite their best efforts they are not in the least bit scary, they are more likely to make you laugh.
We also have six pixies - Acorn is orange, Birch is blue, Daffodil is yellow, Fern is green, Rose is pink and Violet is purple. They have no facial features because according to the Steiner theory if toys have minimal expressions then a child is able to project their own emotions onto it which leads to more creative play.
Finally we have a cute hippo called Harold. Don't tell any of our other toys but Harold is our favourite!
In choosing one of these rattles you are helping empower women to gain financial independence and support their families. One would make a lovely ethical gift for a new baby girl or boy and would be perfect to take to a baby shower, naming day/ceremony, Christening or Baptism.
As these rattles are handmade you should not expect the one you receive to look exactly like the photograph. We think this adds to their charm and hope that you do too.
100% cotton. Machine washable at 40 degrees and can be tumble dried on a low setting. Compliant with European safety standards and are suitable from birth.
The monsters, pixies and octopuses (octopi?) are approximately 13 cm tall. Harold the Hippo is a bit bigger at appoximately 20 cm but as the rattles are all handmade sizes do vary.
