Our jewellery is created using the process of Mokume Gane. Roughly translated as "wood grain metal", Mokume gane is a Japanese process developed in the 17th century. It is produced by layering alternating layers of different metals such as Sterling Silver and 18ct Gold, and fusing them together using heat and pressure to create a billet. The resulting billet is then forged down to size, where a combination of twisting and carving, followed by reforging, brings out the hidden layers, creating unique, woodgrain-like patterns.

Each pattern is a one of a kind; just like a finger print, no pattern can be identical to another. Many different patterns can be created, all with subtle variations that make each pattern unique.

Here at Wabi Mokume, we pride ourselves in handmaking every piece of jewellery, and with the nature of Mokume Gane, your piece of jewellery will be unique to you; it cannot be made exactly the same again. We specialise in making precious metal Mokume Gane which include metals such as Sterling Silver, 9ct Yellow and Red gold, 18ct gold, and Platinum, in combination with semi-precious and precious gemstones.

We hope you find the special piece of jewellery that you are looking for here.

Mokume Gane is an intensive, fully hand made process, requiring days just to make the stock material to pattern. The process must be done by hand, and no shortcuts can be taken. This step must be taken accurately and without error, as any possible errors in the initial stages can cause the Mokume billet to crack, or potentially fall apart, and become useless, delaying in the making of your personal piece of jewellery.
