Rowena continues to develop and produce striking contemporary ceramics for numerous galleries and exhibitions nationally and internationally.
The bowl shape is originally turned in wood and a plaster mould is made from this wooden model. Fine white and cobalt blue clay slips are poured into the plaster mould, and then poured out after given times to produce the clay body of the bowl.
Coloured clay decorating slips are then made by mixing different percentages of various metal oxides and body stains into a fine white clay slip. The coloured clay decorating slips are brushed onto the leather hard clay body while the bowl is turned on a hand wheel. Each layer has to dry sufficiently before the next layer is applied, building up the different colour layers over time. Once the decoration is complete, the bowl is cleaned up and left to dry out completely and is then bisque fired to 1000°C in the kiln.
After this firing has cooled, Rowena glazes the bowl with a lead-free transparent gloss glaze. The bowl is then fired again to 1240°C with an hour long soak at the top temperature (Stoneware)
This bowl is food and dishwasher safe.
