made from:

The large curved vase shape is originally turned in wood and a plaster mould is made from this wooden model. Fine pale yellow & black clay slips are poured into the plaster mould, and then poured out after given times to produce the clay body of the bowl. When the clay body has dried to a leather hard state it is removed from the mould.

Coloured clay decorating slips are then made by mixing different percentages of various metal oxides and body stains into a fine white clay slip. The coloured clay decorating slip is brushed onto the leather hard clay body while the bowl is turned on a hand wheel. Each layer has to dry sufficiently before the next layer is applied, building up the different colour layers over time.

The surface decoration is created using various sgraffito tools when the clay bowl is in a leather-hard state again. The bowl is then left to dry out completely and is bisque fired in the kiln.

After this firing has cooled, Rowena fully glazes the inside of the bowl with a transparent gloss. She also glazes brush stroke areas on the outside of the bowl to add a sparkle of gloss to the otherwise matt finish. The bowl is then fired again to 1180°C with an hour long soak at the top temperature.

All pieces are individually hand made by Rowena in her Brighton studio.
