Sew Sister

Hello and welcome to SewSister – a warm and happy place full of original and creative products, which we hope you will love as much as we love making them.

All SewSister products are original and handcrafted by Sue Allan who won the Textile Directory Design Award 2007 for her dolls. While at college Sue developed a naïve style that evolved from her research into historical and ethnic textiles.  It was the use of simple stylised shapes that she found most appealing and in particular the shapes found in Victorian samplers. Sue makes use of natural and recycled materials whenever possible and feels a particular affection for felt. Sue makes full use of its enormous potential by combining it with other materials in many of her products.

Just as traditional examples of folk art speak through symbolic language, Sue’s work uses simple and symbolic shapes to reflect the text found on the traditional Victorian samplers.  Love, warmth, the heart, nostalgia, past times and memories.  The finished products are often are an effective means of reinforcing these themes and bringing them into people’s lives.  The motifs, incorporated techniques and materials used stem from the past but are now subject to new and contemporary interpretation. The dolls in particular explore the artists journey from a private vision to a more public one in that they are friendly, welcoming and will each one day find their home and their place to exist and be loved.

As a final little note… all of our products are decorative items or accessories.  They are not suitable for children under 5 to play with.  The products all contain small parts which to a young child could present a choking hazard.  The dolls make beautiful keepsake gifts for people of all ages but if bought as decorative items for a child’s room they should be kept out of reach of little hands! Thank you!

We hope you enjoy your visit

Kind regards
