TIME-HONOURED TRADITION NOT FORGOTTEN Piglut is the quirky name of an innovative jewellery brand making waves for pioneering craftsmanship that dates back to early medieval times. Piglut designs eclectic pieces that are based on traditional Chainmaille manufacturing techniques to produce interesting and well crafted jewellery. The name Piglut itself represents a tool that was used more than 800 years ago in the production of Maille, better known as a ‘Gimlet' but in some workshops as a ‘Piglut' because of its snub nosed end. Maille was worn by knights and aristocracy under their suits of armour as added protection from the penetration of weaponry. Maille was crafted by military tailors by painstakingly rolling and drawing red hot iron to produce malleable wire. The iron wire was hardened and tempered before being coiled and cut into rings, which were then formed together to make the Chainmaille. It is these manufacturing techniques that Jets, the designer uses to make her fine jewellery. Piglut’s main collection uses beautifully complex patterns that are based on ancient Maille chains. The current ranges are testimony to this high level of craftsmanship. The pieces are adapted by Jets to provide a modern twist by embellishing the classic weighty silver chains with ornate clasps, beads and watch faces. All ranges have variations of necklaces, bracelets and Watchluts; endearingly coined by Piglut as Watchluts.
