Matilda Rose
Matilda Rose’s bespoke textile designs will fill your home with an explosion of vivid colour and joy. Combining machine and hand embroidery with re appropriated and salvaged materials Matilda creates one off up cycled pieces of textile art, that are intended to become heirloom pieces of the future, loved by your family for years to come.Old-fashioned woollen blankets are the foundation for scatter cushions and wall hangings; tiny treasured scraps that would otherwise be discarded create flashes of print and pattern and are embedded within whimsical and illustrative scenes. Using a much loved hand me down Bernina machine, courting parrots, sports car driving dogs and sea shanty singing mermaids spill from the needle to delight the viewer.Having gained her BA at Nottingham Trent University, Matilda packed her camera and sketchbook and embarked upon an adventure that would lead her to explore the small Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Mexico, Spain and America. Returning to the UK a year later bursting with enthusiasm, Matilda established a successful business re-conditioning vintage caravans and styling boutique interiors. A chance discovery in the studio one afternoon showed Matilda that she could use her sewing machine to draw as easily as she has always used her pencil. Starting to bring the characters of her imagination to life, it was at this point she has found her passion for creating these unique textile pieces. Drawing inspiration from contemporary designers such as Amy Butler as well as the iconic Mexican style of Frida Kahlo Matilda currently works from her 1961 Airstream caravan studio, which is tucked away in a secluded Kentish meadow. All work is copy write of Matilda Rose 2011
