These elegant square plates are made from hard soapstone and have delicate brass finishings. Tactile and weighty, they are superb for serving snacks or canapés, or can be used as a table display. They come in three sizes - small, medium and large. You can buy them individually or as a set (one of each size).
The soapstone is mined and carved in western Kenya. It feels like marble, is heavy and perpetually cold to touch. Hard soap stone differs from the more common, softer variety because it is extracted from deeper withiin the rock.
Hard soapstone is more difficult to come by — we found only one supplier in Nairobi, so even in Kenya it is a rarity. You may detect some variations in shading as well as some discolouration, which occur naturally in the rock.
Sizes
Small - 10cm x 10cm
Medium - 15cm x 15cm
Large - 20cm x 20cm
A set of three has one of each size.
Please note: These plates can be used for dining but knives will scratch them. They can also pick up stains from food such as beetroot if not washed soon after eating. They are not dishwasher safe and should be washed fairly quickly rather than soaked for a long time.
