Working from my studio near Lewes at the edge of the South Downs I work almost exclusively with original vintage fabrics and in particular cotton barkcloths from the 1930s- 1960s. Lampshades are a wonderful medium for bringing them back to their former glory and show off the artistry of the patterns. These pre-loved fabrics have enjoyed a former life as curtains, bedspreads and tablecloths. I spend hours tracking them down from all over Europe and the US and now have a collection of over 200 prints. Barkcloth is a 4ply fabric distinguishable by its soft, nubby texture and open weave and beautiful intensity of colour on both sides of the fabric achieved by VAT dyes. The soft sided traditional lampshades are all tailored by hand using a bound frame and lots of tiny stitches. They are trimmed top and bottom with a selection of 100% cotton trimmings and fringes all laboriously dyed by us to compliment the colours in the vintage barkcloth. The wire frames are all madehere in Sussex from 3.25 mm top quality heavy gauge wire which is Epoxy coated /painted white to prevent rusting. . Our wire technician has been making lampshade frames for over 40 years and shares our delight in re-discovering old form designs. Our contemporary firm sided lampshades all have a beautifully hand rolled edge and are lined with the best quality fire retardant PVC . The range of re-purposed lighting continues to grow rapidly. All lights are wired by a professional electrician and PAT tested and certificated. The majority of our work is bespoke so if you don't see exactly the right lampshade or light in stock do get in touch and I'd be delighted to send you details of additional size, shape and fabric options.
